Banks lead 2.9 pct fall in Indian shares

Indian shares fell 2.9 percent, their sharpest drop in three months, in a broad-based sell off on Monday that was led by banks such as ICICI Bank after a Reserve Bank of India (RBI) policy tightening, and also by losses in telecoms.

According to a Press Trust of India report, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is said to have conducted an air trial with the Pilotless Target Aircraft, Lakshya. The exercise was conducted to test target location and precision firing by pilots of Jaguar and Mirage 2000 fighter jets of the IAF was conducted over the Bay of Bengal near to Chandipur, about 15 km from Balasore.

Brazilian steelmaker CSN said on Monday it had agreed to buy Anglo-Dutch rival Corus for USD 9.6 billion, trumping an offer from Tata Steel announced only hours before. Companhia Siderurgica Nacional said it would pay 515 pence a share in cash for each Corus share, topping Tata Steel`s offer of 500 pence a share.
