NEW DELHI, MARCH 3: Fourteen months after the product patent regime came into force, the Indian Patents Office has granted its first ever product patent recognised in India, to Swiss pharma major F. Hoffmann La-Roche (Roche).
The patent has gone to Pegasys, Roche’s therapy for Hepatitis-C, for twenty years starting May 15, 1997. Hepatitis-C afflicts 170 million people worldwide, some 7 per cent of whom are in India.

New Delhi: Reliance Energy and NTPC Ltd are among companies in talks with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) for possible forays into the nuclear power generation sector.
Coming in the wake of the new Indo-US civil nuclear deal, NPCIL estimates the country could add 20,000-40,000 MW of nuclear power generation capacity over the next 10 years or so if several more players, including private sector companies, enter the sector.

MUMBAI: Global car majors like Ford, General Motors, Toyota and others are not too happy with the recent budgetary move to reduce excise duty on small cars (up to 4000 mm in length, with engine capacity up to 1200 cc for petrol cars and 1500 cc for diesel cars) to 16% from 24%, as it throws their growth plans in India out of gear. The policy decision of the government is seen as being detrimental to building a globally competitive India.

As many as 150 of 1400 striking resident doctors of BMC hospitals were on Friday terminated from service, the Additional Municipal Commissioner said.
The services of 600 more striking resident doctors of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation hospitals, who are post-graduates, will be terminated by Saturday evening, Additional Municipal Commissioner V Patankar said.
